Westgate City Center - Glendale (Near Phoenix) Arizona
by Elizabeth Mitchell
Where is the New Westgate City Center?: Westgate City Center, anchored by Jobing.com Arena and University of Phoenix Stadium off Loop 101 and Glendale Avenue, is bringing 6.5 million square feet of shops, restaurants, offices, theaters and residential units to Glendale (near Phoenix, Arizona) in a formerly agricultural area.
Shopping: Look for shops like The Gap, when Westgate starts to fill out. They have big plans. The project's centerpiece is a 60,000-gallon fountain, modeled after the landmark Bellagio water feature along the Las Vegas Strip. Westgate sports bright color schemes, including mint green and burnt orange, which took their cues from Miami's chic South Beach district.
Entertainment: There is a new 4,000 seat AMC theater at Westgate. And, of course, the Jobing.com Arena is there providing sports and entertainment year round.
Hotels: The first hotel, a Four Star Renaissance Hotel and attached convention center will begin construction in late 2005 and is expected to open in mid 2007. Others will follow.
Homes: Looking to attract those loving the urban lifestyle, Westgate City Center plans sleek urban townhouses and chic apartments. The Quarter at Westgate will feature 171 airy, loft-like townhouses, available for sale beginning in early 2006. The Alexan Westgate apartment community will be available for lease in Fall 2006.
Restaurants: Already Wesgate has a Gordon Biersch Brewery, a Yard House Restaurant, and Jimmy Buffet plans to bring Margaritaville to the center. They tout a plan to have everything from cafes and bistros to fine dining and martini bars.
Getting to Westgate: If you can get to Jobbing.com Arena, you can get to Westgate. It is basically located off the Loop 101 on the west side of the Phoenix valley. Here is Glendale's information leading you to their various hot spots.

Westgate City Center - From Cotton Fields to Chic Urban Entertainment Village: The growth in the West Valley of Phoenix is amazing to watch. First we watched as the space-ship like Cardinal's Stadium grew from the dusty fields off the Loop 101. Next, the stadium was sponsored by the University of Phoenix and the name was changed. Then shoppers and sportsmen flocked to the grand opening of Cabela's, complete with indoor trout pond and a Disneyland-like taxidermy display.
And now, Scottsdale is being given a run for its money with the new urban Westgate City Center, a totally created entertainment and shopping village built on, you guessed it, dusty old cotton fields. Its exciting to experience the energy and creativity. And, we hope the Bellagio-like fountain will keep the dust down!
